- History:
Around 1882 the Lavanttaler Bananenapfel, also called Mother apple or American Mother was brought from Massachusetts (USA) to Wolfsberg/Giries, Lavant Valley, probably by the Birkershauser family.
The American Mother is of unknown parentage and was first described in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1844.
Also the first description of this apple cultivar by the German pomologist W. Lauche dates back to around 1882.
- Region:
Lavanttal (Lavant Valley), Carinthia. The Lavant Valley is a north-south oriented valley in the Federal Province of Carinthia which is characterized by mild and relatively dry climatic conditions.
- Lavanttaler Bananenapfel (Lavant Valley banana-apple):
The banana-apple is both a dessert apple and an apple for processing.
The trees are heavy croppers and are not susceptible to apple scab.
The apples are middle-sized, the skin is green-yellow and orange to bright-red on the side which faces the sun. The flesh is yellow-white. The flavour is sweet, subacid, very aromatic and resembles that of bananas, which has led to the denomination “banana apple”.
The Lavanttaler Bananenapfel is a late autumn/early-winter apple and is ready for eating from November to January. As the storage period is rather short, an optimal harvest period is important.
- Utilization:
The Lavanttaler Bananenapfel is used as a dessert apple as well as for the production of apple juice and apple spirit.
The Lavanttaler Bananenapfelbrand (Lavant Valley banana-apple spirit) has been produced from handpicked apples since the 20th century and is characterized by a unique, complex flavour spectrum.
