- History:

This apple cultivar is a seedling found by chance in the 19th   century by Johann Klöckner in his orchard at Wolfsgruben near Gleisdorf in Styria (Austria). Since about 1860 this apple has been cultivated in Styria.
The apple cultivar was publicly presented for the first time on the occasion of the Vienna World Exhibition in 1873 and was denominated in honour of the then heir to the throne, Crown Prince Rudolf (1858-1889), son of Franz Joseph I, Emperor of Austria-Hungary (1830-1916).

- Region:
Styria

- Crown Prince Rudolf:
The apple cultivar Crown Prince Rudolf has gained importance only in Austria. Reportedly,  cultivation of the variety failed in other countries. It obviously needs specific local conditions which seem to be optimal in Styria.

Styrian Crown Prince Rudolf is a small to medium-sized apple, its size ranging from 5 – 5.7 cm in height and from 6 – 7 cm in width.
The fruit skin is yellow-green to green-whitish with an intensive reddish flush on the side exposed to the sun.
The fruit flesh is whitish to cream-coloured, its texture is soft and the flesh is juicy and tastes slightly sweet and subacid.

Styrian Crown Prince Rudolf is a typical winter apple which is ripe for eating from November to January and can be stored until March/April.

- Utilization:
Styrian Crown Prince Rudolf is marketed as fresh fruit or used for distilling pure “Styrian Crown Prince Rudolf apple spirit”. The minimum alcoholic strength by volume shall be 42 %.

- Protection:
The designation Crown Prince Rudolf is protected for the geographical area of Styria in Codex Alimentarius Austriacus, Chapter B 23: Spirits. Annex 1: Protected Designations
