- History:
Today’s apple cultivar Styrian Maschanzker originated in Styria, probably before 1800.
In 1877 this cultivar variety was first described as Styrian Wintermaschanzker and as Styrian Winterborsdorfer.
The Styrian Maschanzker has never been widely cultivated outside Styria or Carinthia.
Before the beginning of the 20th century up to the 1960s, the Styrian Maschanzker was an important rural apple variety on the markets. The apple variety is considered a typical example of richness in vitamins.
- Region:
Styria, traditionally south of the Mur-Mürz-Furche (the valleys formed by the rivers Mur and Mürz).
- Steirischer Maschanzker (Styrian Maschanzker):
The apple cultivar Steirischer Maschanzker (Styrian Maschanzker) also known under the synonyms Steirischer Wintermaschanzker, Steirischer Winterborsdorfer, Grazer Maschanzker, Eisapfel, Brunnapfel, Maschanzka, Maschansker and Maschanska.
Styrian Maschanzker is cultivated on high-stem trees which are characteristic elements of the landscape. The trees have medium growth rates. They are relatively tolerant to soil and climatic conditions, but prefer sufficiently wet and nutrient-rich soils. They do not tolerate heavy clay soils.
The Styrian Maschanzker apples show three forms of fruits, namely rather high, flat and small-sized ones.
The fruits are small to medium-sized, round to depressed-round. The fruit skin is smooth, semi-gloss to shining, yellow to golden, and partly flushed red.
The juicy flesh is light yellow, firm and shows a tender texture. It tastes sweet due to its high sugar content and has a distinctive aromatic Maschanzker flavour.
Maschanzker apples are ripe for harvesting from October onward and are ready for consumption from December to March. They are winter apples and excellent keepers.
- Utilization:
The Styrian Maschanzker is excellently suited as dessert fruit and dried fruit as well as for the production of apple juice and apple spirit.
The Steirische Maschanzker Apfelbrand is a genuine apple spirit which is distilled from fruit mash without added sugar. The minimum alcoholic strength by volume shall be 42%.
Its distinctive flavour is strongly due to the high rate of apple skin contained.
It can be characterized as full flavoured with a typical, slightly bitter note, an elegant fruit skin flavour, and a harmonic aftertaste.
- Protection:
“Steirischer Maschanzker” is protected for the region of Styria in Codex Alimentarius Austriacus, Chapter B 23: Spirits. Annex 1: Protected Designations
