- History:
Already before 1921, when Burgenland was still part of Hungary, salad was delivered to markets in Vienna.

The annexation of Burgenland to Austria in 1921 led to an increase in production and to the registration of the first cooperative for the production and marketing of fresh vegetables.

In 1930 the fruit and vegetable cooperative “Obst- und Gemüsegenossenschaft in Neusiedl am See” was founded. Since 1992 there has been a cooperation with LGV-Frischgemüse in Vienna. In 1995 the cooperation became the SGV-Sonnengemüse-Vertriebsgesellschaft mbH.

In 1933 the Seewinkel region and the natural preserves of Lake Neusiedl gained international acceptance as IUCN Category II preserve “National Park Neusiedler See-Seewinkel”.
Since 2001 Seewinkel has been a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site.

- Region:
GENUSS REGION ÖSTERREICHBURGENLAND - Seewinkler GemüseLandschaft um Seewinkl mit Feldern

The region Seewinkel is located in the east of Lake Neusiedl, in the Austrian Federal Province of Burgenland.

The region Seewinkel borders Hungary in the east and south and Lake Neusiedl in the west.
It encompasses the municipalities Andau, Apetlon, Frauenkirchen, Gols, Illmitz, Halbturn, Mönchhof, Pamhagen, Podersdorf am See, St.Andrä am Zicksee, Tadten, Wallern im Burgenland, and Weiden am See.

The region “Seewinkler Gemüse” refers to the municipalities Andau, Pamhagen, St.Andrä am Zicksee, Tadten, and Wallern. In this area vegetables are grown by about 300 agricultural enterprises (of which 30 organic farmers).

Seewinkel is a part of the pannonic lowlands. It is the lowest area of Austria (on average 117 m above sea level).

Characteristic features of the landscape are wide open plains, a salt marsh flora, and many small, shallow salt lakes.

Soil and climatic conditions:
The region of Seewinkel encompasses the most western salt steppe in Europe. In addition to salty soils there are black earths (chernosem) rich in nutrients and limy sandy soils. Black earths
have a mighty humus layer and are thus perfectly suited for farming.

The climate is pannonic and precipitation is low (annual average below 600 mm). The Seewinkel region is one of the warmest regions of Austria. Annual average temperature is 10 °C. Summer temperatures rise to over 25 °C on about 61 days. Summers are dry and hot, winters are poor in snow and fog.
Temperatures range from 40 °C in summer to -20 °C in winter. The vegetation period is long and lasts for about 250 days.
Extreme temperatures and aridity in summer lead to higher evaporation during summer and to the formation of pannonic salt steppes.

The vegetable production is favoured by a high number of sun hours, Pannonic climate conditions, the

climatic influence from Lake Neusiedl, and warm saline soils.

- Seewinkel vegetables:
Seewinkler Gemüse encompasses more than 30 vegetable varieties.
Main products are tomatoes, peppers, fine vegetables (radish, young onion, salad, cauliflower, Chinese cabbage, courgettes, sweetcorn), and marjoram.

Cultivation:

Vegetables are field-grown (400 hectares) or grown in greenhouses (15 ha) and foil tunnels (35 ha). Organic vegetables are mainly field-grown (50 hectares).

Vegetable production aims at the sustainable production of high-quality vegetables taking into account the conservation of resources, bio-diversity and economic factors.

The production respects the guidelines for integrated production (IP) which are the basis for the AMA Quality Seal. Furthermore, the organic farming of vegetables is gaining importance.
